К МГИМО отошла и знаменитая Лазаревская библиотека, которая не имела себе равных по составу востоковедческой литературы в Москве.
В 1958 г. в МГИМО влился Институт внешней торговли МВТ СССР, созданный в 1934 г. в Ленинграде, а затем переведенный в Москву. В результате был существенно расширен экономический факультет, усилилась его ориентация на подготовку специалистов для внешней торговли и внешнеэкономической деятельности. В 1969 году были созданы Международно-правовой факультет и факультет Международной журналистики.
В 1991 г. в Институте открыт факультет Международного бизнеса и делового администрирования, а в 1998 году учрежден Факультет политологии.
С 1994 г. решением Правительства России Университету поручено осуществлять подготовку специалистов в области государственного и муниципального управления из числа лиц с высшим профессиональным образованием, работающих в органах государственного управления. Эти программы подготовки реализуются новым структурным подразделением университета — Международным институтом управления.
В феврале 2000 г. по инициативе крупнейших нефтяных, газовых и энергетических компаний России в структуре МГИМО был образован Международный институт энергетической политики и дипломатии. Целью создания Института стала подготовка кадров для развития международного энергетического сотрудничества.
В 1994 г. институт получил статус университета.
